STAT177 test answers

Math and Logic

  1. x = 621/21 = 29.57 which rounds to 29.6.
  2. Sam needs to bring in $26 + $50 = $76 per day to achieve a profit of $50 per day. Since the gross profit is 75 cents per hot dog, we divide 76 by 0.75 to get 101.33. If he sells 101 hot dogs, his profit is below $50. So, he needs to sell 102 hot dogs per day.
  3. Price = 100,000 + (100)(1500) = 100,000 + 150,000 = 250,000
  4. 6 of the 12 children know how to play chess. Since 3 of the 6 children who know who to play chess are girls, 50% of the chess players are girls.
  5. Since 25% + 34% = 59%, the percentage of blue balls is 100% - 59% = 41%.
  6. 100% - 65% = 35% eat out at most once a week.

  7. In a cell (say cell A501), type in the cell =average(a1:a500) and then click the enter key. The average function is also available from the functions button (which is usually next to the autosum button) under the Statistical category.
  8. Click the column A header. From the toolbar, click the A to Z button to sort the data from lowest to highest. If this button is not on the toolbar, from the Data menu, choose Sort and then Sort by Column A Ascending. Click the OK button.
  9. From the Format menu, choose Cells. From the Numbers tab choose the Number format. Set the Decimal places to 1. Click OK.
  10. Suppose the first number is in cell A1. In cell B1, type =2*a1 click enter. Then you can drag and drop cell B1 for the remaining cells in column B.
  11. If the percent button appears on the toolbar, click it and the format of the cell will change to percent. If not, from the Format menu, choose Cells. From the Format Cells menu, choose Percentage and click OK. By default, it sets the percentage at 2 decimal places. This can be changed according to your preference.
  12. Select the column headings A through E. From the Edit menu, choose Delete. Sometimes, it will ask you which way you want to shift the remaining cells. Choose whatever makes sense.
  13. Click the column C header. From the Format menu, choose Column and then AutoFit Selection from the Column sub-menu. The other option is to double click the right edge of the C column.
